MOORESVILLE

Though it might be difficult to work up the courage to call in an expert when your business is floundering, the risk is well worth it, according to Mooresville business consultant Roger Engelau.

Engelau, who opened an ActionCoach business consulting franchise in November, said often businesses that are struggling have a few key issues to sort out — whether they are cash-flow problems, collecting payment or other setbacks — before they can get back on track and be successful. Even though a business coach might see all the business’ mistakes, a successful operation is the reward for asking for help.

“The average small-business owner has taken huge risks, and I think they deserve better support,” Engelau said. “They’re putting their livelihoods on the line. Coaching is a very personal thing. You’ve got to feel comfortable to interact with someone in that way.”

ActionCoach started with a business consultant in Australia. Today, there are 1,100 ActionCoach consultants in the world, including about 300 in the United States and 25 to 30 in the Midwest, Engelau said. Two, including Engelau, are active in Indiana.

In addition to one-on-one business consulting, Engelau’s ActionCoach franchise offers occasional seminars and group coaching with like-minded business owners. Every quarter, he hosts a GrowthClub meeting in which participating businesses are given weekly goals.

To get started with ActionCoach, business owners have a “discovery meeting” with Engelau, and they decide together the best course of action. Engelau guarantees he will help each business find enough additional revenue to cover his annual fee. ActionCoach consultants typically work with each business for 18 to 24 months, and Engelau said he can take on 15 to 20 clients at once.

ActionCoach offers six steps to better business results, the first of which involves looking at cash flow, time management and the business’ destination.

“One of the big things for business owners is they just don’t have any time,” Engelau said. “We try to free up five hours a week for them to work on their business, not in their business. The goal is to create such a strong business that the business owner can choose to stay involved or step back and receive passive income from the business.”

Engelau attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and spent five years in the Army. He later earned a master’s of business administration from Anderson University. He honed his business skills working in sales for Procter and Gamble, helped turn around businesses such as a heating-oil company and part of Citizen’s Gas in Indianapolis and worked with Indianapolis’ economic development efforts.

Engelau opened his ActionCoach franchise in November with his wife, Susie, and they work out of their Mooresville home serving clients in central Indiana.

Susie Engelau also worked for 30 years in business, although her experience was with large corporations involved in banking and finance. She said the disparities between resources available for large corporations and those available for small businesses, right down to the cost of making copies, are vast.

“It’s been a shock for me to see what little resources (small businesses) have,” she said. “The founder’s (of ActionCoach) vision was world abundance. We’re building abundance in Morgan County, and you do that through small business.”

Roger Engelau said, “(Small business) is really where the vitality of our economic system resides.”

He recalled a business he helped that had lost $90,000 in revenue even though demand for its services was growing. What the business needed, Engelau said, was a loan, but the banks refused to give it one, and the owners weren’t sure the company would make it. After Engelau taught the owners to slow down their growth and make a budget, the company was able to secure a $1.2 million loan and is “doing great.”

For another client, a heating and cooling company, ActionCoach has brought the owners something else they could not have achieved without it, Susie Engelau said.

“They say, ‘Roger gives me HOPE,’” she said.
